<p>epa01574576 British John Hume, a former politician in Northern Ireland, founding member of the Social Democratic and Labour Party and co-recipient of the 1998 Nobel Peace Prize, delivers his speech at the opening session of the 9th World Summit of Nobel Peace Price Winners, in Paris, France, 11 December 2008. This summit is being held at the Hotel de Ville from 11 to 13 December and devoted to 'Human rights and a World without violence' In it, -acording to the organizers- 'it is of utmost importance to turn our eyes to the problems of Human Rights', because without such rights violence, poverty, lack of resources will thrive and will impede us to ensure a future of a long-lasting peace throughout the planet Earth'. In the 9th SummitŐs sessions it is proposed to touch upon subjects as how can we build peace through the safeguard of human rights, what are the strategies to affirm the universalism of the fundamental rights, how to ensure the defense of individual rights in todayŐs world, how to foster the establishment of the democratic values worldwide and finally, how to make rights concrete by eliminating social and financial inequalities among people in our societies. At its end the Nobel Peace Laureates will issue a declaration containing elaborate strategies of international policies, which shall be implemented to ensure a real observance of the principles. W wieku 83 lat zmarł w poniedziałek John Hume, północnoirlandzki polityk katolicki, który był jednym z architektów procesu pokojowego w Irlandii Północnej, za co w 1998 roku otrzymał Pokojową Nagrodę Nobla. Informację o śmierci potwierdziła jego partia SDLP.

Zawarte w 1998 roku porozumienie wielkopiątkowe kończyło ponad 30-letni konflikt polityczno-religijny w Irlandii Północnej i umożliwiło powstanie wspólnego rządu reprezentującego protestantów i katolików.
